David Brown leaving the Foundation

The Trustees of the Charles Hayward Foundation are sorry to announce that following a reduction in the value of their endowment and a significant decline in forecast income for 2009 that they have had to make the post of Administrator of the Foundation redundant.

David Brown has diligently served the Foundation for the past 15 years and has ably led the organisation since his promotion to Administrator in 2003. We commend his ethic of service to the voluntary sector and value his many contributions to effective grant-making particularly in policy development, assessment and evaluation. We thank him for his excellent work for the Foundation over the years and wish him all the best in his future career.

Young People's Programme

Last year trustees decided to create a pro-active grant-making programme where we sought out selected organisations working with young people at risk rather than receiving applications. We had the help of six key organisations in developing the scheme and our assessment criteria. We have devised a system for thoroughly assessing organisations and their projects with the aim of making substantially larger grants than our average.

Over the past few months, trustees have made grant offers to two organisations which successfully completed our selection process. We will be working with these two organisations over the coming years both to evaluate their projects and also to measure the effectiveness of this more pro-active approach to our grant making.

We will not be making any more grants in this programme for the time being
